About
Dr. Bill Withem holds a Doctor of MArts Degree in Composition from Michigan State University, where he studied composition with Charles Ruggiero. He earned a Master of Music in Theory and C from Illinois State University, where he studied with Stephen A. Taylor and David Feurzeig, and a Master of Music in Film Scoring from The University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where he studied with film composer David McHugh. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Theory and Composition from Appalachian State University.
Withem’s Emmy-nominated music has been performed throughout the Western Hemisphere, with premieres in New York, Los Angeles, and Detroit. His music for choreographer Lina Puodziukaite’s Egle received its premiere at Lincoln Center. His orchestral work Supernova was premiered by conductor JosLuís Maúrtua and the Orquesta Sinfnica Nacional of Peru. Withem's one-act opera, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, premiered at Michigan State University under the baton of Raphael Jimenez. Withem was nominated for an Emmy for best musical score to the documentary film Imported From China, directed by Geri Alumit Zeldes. Other recent premieres include works for the Central Michigan University Symphony Orchestra, the Flint Youth Symphony Orchestra, and the Flint Youth Ballet.
Withem currently serves as Assistant Professor of Music at Nova Southeastern University, where he teaches courses in music technology and production, theory, composition, and performance.
