About

My principle research interests focus on scleractinian coral biology, conservation, and restoration, with emphasis on experimental evaluation of the impacts of climate change, ocean acidification, and land-based sources of pollution on coral biology and ecology. Particular areas of current interest include assessment of chronic nutrient exposure impacts and evaluation of single hydrocarbon, crude oil, and dispersed oil effect thresholds on scleractinian corals. Understanding the influence of anthropogenic environmental factors on coral health is essential in the prediction and management of future coral condition and growth.

I currently direct:
  • the Coral Histology Laboratory, which utilizes histological and ultrastructural analytical techniques to examine multiple aspects of coral physiology and health. Application of these tools aids in the elucidating the influence of anthropogenic environmental factors on coral health, and provides key information for the prediction and management of future coral condition and growth. This laboratory is one of the few worldwide which focuses on histology of corals and marine organisms.
  • the Marine Toxicology Laboratory, which has the equipment and capability to conduct toxicity assays of various compounds on coral species, including volatiles.
  • the Land-based Coral Nursery, which houses corals that are available for experimentation and restoration. The nursery provides scientists with multiple coral species for research and experimentation, and houses a genetically diverse living stock collection of corals for restoration activities.
